If you haven't already heard, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon was reissued as a 40th anniversary edition on vinyl, CD and digital download this summer. The album was remastered from the original analog masters and pressed on 180-gram vinyl with an attention to detail that is just absurd. On September 27th, 2009, one of rock's most celebrated albums will be re-released in honor of its 40th birthday. This special edition will feature new artwork and packaging not seen before and a 5.1 mix by James Guthrie done especially for this release. Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd's best-known album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It was first released in March 1973 and has since become one of the most popular albums on vinyl. By November 2013, it had sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, including more than 15 million in the U.S. alone. In addition, Dark Side of the Moon was an immediate commercial success upon its release with no pre-release single or marketing campaign – a fact that surprised many music industry insiders at the time – and it quickly became a cultural phenomenon as well as one of Rolling Stone magazine's greatest records of all time. The 40th anniversary edition of Dark Side of the Moon will be released in three configurations: a single 180-gram LP, a 2-disc 180-gram LP set, and a 4-disc Deluxe Box Set which includes the original album remastered, DVD with 5.1 surround sound, disc with previously unreleased session recordings, 5.1 surround mix for stereo headphones, Blu-Ray with high resolution 5.1 surround mix and 24/96 stereo mixes, mini book filled with rare photos and memorabilia from the era. It is available in either an 18x24cm book sized package or a "super jewel case" 11CD package which also includes two DVDs. The Deluxe Box Set was released on September 27, 2009.Pink Floyd were approached by EMI Records to re-release the album. The original vinyl version was remastered at Abbey Road Studios by James Guthrie, who is the son-in-law of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour. The new vinyl version was brought up to speed with the best available technology of its time using special German-made EMI cutting lathes which are capable of generating extremely accurate sound cut at 45 or 33rpm. Pink Floyd's engineer Tim Kemp supervised this project and oversaw all aspects of the technical process (from artwork to mastering) during production for this anniversary reissue. Pink Floyd asked Abbey Road Studios for a new version of the album, and the team at Abbey Road set about trying to re-create the original analogue mixes from the 1973 sessions. This proved difficult, given that these mixes were recorded onto an AVID multitrack machine with limited built-in redundancy. To replicate this mix without compromising quality, all elements of each track had to be reproduced using analogue tape as a source. In addition, every element of Dark Side was carefully re-balanced in order to achieve comparable balances between pieces in the mix. The recording engineer Andy Jackson created a dedicated analog mixing console for this purpose which was used at Abbey Road Studios where it was monitored by engineer James Guthrie.
